View on Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a plant that is grown in India, Asia and Africa. Its trademark golden color makes it a popular fabric dye, and its mild but distinctive taste makes it a common ingredient in many Indian and Asian dishes, such as curry powders and flavored rices.

Similar to its relative, the ginger plant, the part of the turmeric plant used in spices and supplements is the underground stem (rhizome). Turmeric is available as a powder, capsule, tea or extract. In some cases, it’s made into a paste to apply to the skin.

Traditional uses of turmeric are many, and range from relieving joint pain to regulating menstruation. Turmeric has also been used on the skin for eczema, for itchiness and to help wounds heal. More recently, uses include treating inflammation, heartburn, gallstones and cancer.

Our take

Although turmeric has been used for thousands of years in India and Asia, relatively little scientific research has been conducted to support its use for health conditions.

Some studies suggest that turmeric — and, more specifically, a chemical found in turmeric called curcumin — may be an effective treatment for pain, inflammation, high cholesterol and other medical conditions, but more research is necessary to confirm these findings.

For most adults, turmeric is safe to use — so there’s no harm in trying it to see if it works for you. Side effects are usually mild, though there is some evidence that high doses or long-term use may cause indigestion, nausea or diarrhea.

Ask your health care provider about taking turmeric if you have gallbladder disease, since it may worsen the condition, or if you take an anticoagulant medication, such as warfarin, as turmeric may increase the risk of bleeding.

What the research says

  1. High cholesterol

Some research suggests that turmeric supplements may be effective in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In one study, overweight people with a high level of fats, or lipids, in the blood (hyperlipidemia) experienced a decrease in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol and triglycerides, a type of fat found in blood.

  1. Osteoarthritis

Several studies on turmeric’s relation to osteoarthritis have been conducted. Research suggests that turmeric may reduce pain and increase ease of movement in people with this condition. In fact, when it comes to pain relief, one study found that taking turmeric extract three times daily was comparable to taking 1,200 milligrams of ibuprofen daily. While these results are promising, more research is necessary.

  1. Rheumatoid arthritis

Some evidence suggests that turmeric might lessen some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, such as joint swelling and morning stiffness. More research is needed to confirm these findings.

  1. Other uses

Turmeric’s effect on Alzheimer’s disease, Crohn’s disease, certain cancers (including colorectal and prostate), depression, diabetes, joint pain, irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions is also being explored.

View on Ginseng

The term ginseng is associated with 13 different species of perennial, deciduous plants in the genus Panax. As a supplement, however, ginseng most commonly refers to Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) and sometimes refers to American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius).

Asian ginseng grows in China, Korea and Siberia. The gnarled, brown ginseng root is the part of the plant that’s used in supplements. Ginseng root sometimes resembles a human body because of the stringy offshoots that look like arms and legs. Due to that resemblance, practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine often considered the herb a cure-all for most human ills, including: allergies, asthma, appetite stimulant, bleeding disorders, breathing difficulties, cancer, dizziness, headache, heart disorders, insomnia, liver disease, stroke and many more. Asian ginseng has been used for health-related purposes for more than 2,000 years.

Ginseng is considered safe when taken for short periods. Side effects, if any, tend to be mild and include headaches and sleep and gastrointestinal problems.

However, don’t use ginseng for more than six months or exceed the recommended maximum daily doses. Also, avoid taking ginseng if you’re pregnant, as some research suggests it could contribute to birth defects.

Our take

Evidence suggests that short-term use of ginseng may improve mental performance and that it produces few side effects when taken as directed. Therefore, ginseng gets a green light. However, do not take ginseng for an extended period of time. More research is needed before specific recommendations regarding its use can be made.

More studies are also needed to determine how effective ginseng is in terms of other conditions such as cancer and diabetes.

What the research says

  1. Cancer

Some evidence suggests that ginseng may improve quality of life for those who have cancer. Results are mixed, however, for ginseng’s effect on cancer risk. Some preliminary studies suggest that ginseng may reduce the risk of certain cancers, while other research contradicts these findings. More research is necessary to confirm these findings.

  1. Erectile dysfunction

Research suggests that ginseng may improve sexual function in men who have erectile dysfunction.

  1. Exercise performance

Some athletes use ginseng to improve stamina, but it’s unclear whether it provides any benefit. Research does suggest that ginseng does not improve aerobic performance. More research is necessary.

  1. Heart

Ginseng appears to have some antioxidant effects that may benefit people with heart disorders. However, better studies are needed to make a firm recommendation.

  1. Mental performance and mood

Studies report that ginseng may modestly improve mood, reaction times, and thinking, attention and learning performance in healthy middle-aged people. There is also some evidence that — while ginseng does not appear to improve memory — it may have a positive effect on cognitive performance in people with Alzheimer’s disease. More research is needed.

  1. Type 2 diabetes

Evidence for ginseng’s effect on type 2 diabetes is mixed. Some studies report that ginseng may lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, while other studies suggest that ginseng does not significantly improve glucose concentrations. More research is needed.

Kratom is a drug that has become popular in the US. If you are new to it, experienced users will recommend the medication to you since it has many benefits that you may enjoy. Benefits of the drug include helping people who are trying to stop using other drugs such as heroin, especially.

Because of its popularity, vendors have taken the business to the internet. Since you want the best of this product, then it is best to do your homework well before purchase. We are going to highlight five points to consider when searching for the appropriate vendor.

  1. A few negative comments are good for the customer

No business, whether five or seven stars, is a 100 percent reliable. Never will you meet that type of business. Nonetheless, businesspersons, especially those that own websites and social media pages have come up with a new trick.

They understand that reviews attract customers to their firm. Thus, they rely on false reports, which in turn gets many to deception. If you do not meet some negative comments in the review, then that is another scam. Read the comments and find out if you can spot any negative commentary. It helps you judge the business and their services.

  1. Ask for a small sample

Everybody loves freebies. As a way to market their product, they should allow you to test a small amount of it to find out its quality. Some vendors may choose to add chemicals that could hurt your body.

Trustworthy sellers should not have a problem if you ask for a sample. It helps you judge the quality by yourself without leaning on the advice of others. Remember, something that is good for you might be harsh on someone else. Thus, it is good to test it by yourself.

  1. Look for a well-structured website

The secret to increasing authority and trust among clients is building a reputable site. One that is attractive proves a lot to buyers because it means that you put a massive investment into the venture.

On the other hand, some vendors will overlook this part. If he or she compromises on launching a lousy website, with the excuse that they have an excellent physical bar, then that is no excuse at all. With this in mind, avoid sites that have poor structures.

  1. Talk to a few reviewers from forums

As mentioned earlier, some of the reviews you find on these websites are not that trustworthy. This means that you can see yourself buying something that is poor in quality. To help boost your confidence in this area, communicate with one of the reviewers.

As you discuss, talk about what they found about the drug, the vendor, and how he or she does business. Some of the ways you can reach to them are via email, private message, through their social media page, which is the easy way to do it.

  1. Research on various vendors

A little background check on your vendors does wonders. It is always good to know their experience in this particular field. Not everyone can mind-read people; therefore, try to be careful when choosing one.

At this point, try to find as many as you can, and know about their products. They should also highlight how they do their transactions, safety precautions especially when you have to use your credit card, how they deliver, and more so, if they have a physical store.

Phytonutrients are one of the foundations of phytotherapy: plant-source compounds which offer significant nutritional and/or therapeutic benefits for human health. Scientists have so far identified several hundred different phytonutrients. Featuring prominently among this vast family are the famous polyphenols and carotenoids. Indeed, it is these natural active principles which are responsible for the benefits of a wide variety of herbal supplements such as medicinal plants, super-berries and super-foods. In particular, they have been isolated in several plants used in traditional Asian medicine.

benefits of Phytonutrients

Phytonutrients have been the subject of extensive investigation and are thus well-known to the scientific community. Studies show herbal supplements are able to fight a large number of aggressors, and at various levels in the body. Now available as nutritional supplements, phytonutrients constitute powerful allies for maintaining a healthy body!

Health benefits of phytonutrients

It would be almost impossible to cover all the benefits of phytonutrients given the vast size of this family of active principles. Each molecule may have different properties and offer different benefits within the body. We can, however, focus on their key virtues.

  1. Antioxidant potency

If we had to restrict ourselves to just one benefit of phytonutrients, it would be without doubt their natural antioxidant power. They combat the accumulation of highly-reactive oxygen species in the body which can cause significant damage to cells. This is what scientists refer to as oxidative stress. Countless studies have shown that phytonutrients fight this process effectively through their antioxidant activity, and as a result, help prevent the development of numerous health problems.

  1. Anti-ageing effects

As mentioned, oxidative stress can cause significant damage to the body. It is particularly associated with promoting premature ageing of cells. With their natural antioxidant power, phytonutrients are able to counteract this mechanism and thus combat various effects of ageing. Indeed, it is precisely in order to harness this anti-ageing effect that certain phytonutrients are today incorporated into cosmetic and nutricosmetic products.

  1. Anti-inflammatory activity

Alongside their antioxidant power, several phytonutrients are able to combat inflammatory reactions in the body. Piperine, extracted from black pepper, is one such anti-inflammatory phytonutrient. Studies have demonstrated its efficacy for reducing intestinal inflammation in particular. Combined with other mechanisms, this anti-inflammatory action makes piperine a valuable aid to digestive health as it facilitates digestion and intestinal transport. It’s also worth noting that this natural active principle encourages nutrient absorption in the gut, which explains why piperine supplements are often recommended as an adjunct to a course of vitamins, minerals or phytonutrients.

  1. Multiple protective effects

Phytonutrients offer considerable protective potential. Studies suggest there may be almost one phytonutrient for every disorder:

  • Cardio-protective potential against certain cardiovascular diseases, particularly those related to inflammation;
  • Hypotensive effect for controlling blood pressure;
  • Neuroprotective potential for combatting degeneration of brain cells;
  • Infection-fighting activity against numerous pathogens;
  • Anti-histamine effect against allergic reactions, particularly allergic rhinitis;
  • Potential anti-cancer action suggested by certain studies with further results awaited;
  • Immune-modulating effect for regulating immune system responses;

Where are phytonutrients found?

Phytonutrients are found in a great many plant species, and in some everyday foods, although the active principle content of such foods can be so low as to require consumption of huge quantities! In addition, certain phytonutrients are found in the inedible parts of plants such as the bark and roots. To benefit fully from the positive effects of phytonutrients, they can now be found in the form of:

  • powders to be used sparingly in cooking;
  • essential oils to be used with extreme caution as they are highly-concentrated and can pose risks to health;
  • cosmetics including topical anti-ageing creams;

capsules such as the product Apple Polyphenols for quick and easy supplementation.

Berberine is a natural active principle found in many plants, particularly those of the berberidaceae family such as Berberis vulgaris and Berberis aristata. The multiple benefits of these two plants are recognised by a number of traditional systems of medicine, including those of China and India where the properties of berberidaceae plants are used to fight infection. Over the years, this anti-infection action has been attributed to berberine, with scientists also demonstrating numerous other benefits for this natural active principle. Available nowadays as a dietary supplement, berberine is associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing, anti-infection, anti-diabetes and blood lipid-lowering effects.

Health benefits of berberine

The properties and traditional uses of berberine have attracted considerable scientific interest. Researchers have identified multiple health benefits for this active principle.

  1. Reduces oxidative stress

Berberine is a natural antioxidant. This means it is able to combat oxidative stress – the accumulation of highly-reactive oxygen species that cause considerable damage in the body. [1]

  1. Fights premature ageing

Oxidative stress is known to play a role in the ageing process. As a result of its natural antioxidant potency, berberine thus helps to combat various effects of ageing. [2]

  1. Moderates inflammatory response

Berberine also has an anti-inflammatory effect which appears to be particularly effective against infection-induced inflammation. A number of studies have shown that taking berberine regularly can help reduce the body’s inflammatory response.

  1. Combats infection

As mentioned, berberine has been identified as the ingredient responsible for the anti-infection effects of berberidaceae plants. Featuring in several traditional Asian pharmacopoeia, these plants have been used for many years to fight infections such as infectious diarrhoea. Research has shown that berberine not only has anti-bacterial effects against staphylococcus, streptococcus and salmonella, but also anti-amoebic and anti-protozoan activity.

  1. Improves the lipid profile

 Scientists have also highlighted berberine’s potential for lowering blood lipids. It appears to reduce blood cholesterol and triglycerides by activating a specific enzyme called AMPK. It may therefore offer significant potential for preventing health problems linked to excess weight and obesity. [4]

  1. Treats type 2 diabetes

Scientists have for some years been investigating the anti-diabetes action of berberine. It appears to have a similar capacity for lowering blood glucose levels as diabetes drugs such as metformin, with researchers showing that it reducing glycaemia via several mechanisms. It seems to increase insulin sensitivity, encourage glucose uptake and improve its use in the body. It may therefore help control the hyperglycaemia that characterises type 2 diabetes. [5]

  1. Prevents and treats NASH

Scientists have recently discovered a new health benefit for berberine: it may help prevent and treat non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Within just a few years, this inflammatory liver condition has become a major public health issue. It is caused by abnormal accumulation of fat in liver cells, due largely to poor diet and lack of physical activity.

Where can berberine be found?

As a result of its many benefits, berberine is widely-recommended in the field of phytotherapy and has become very popular as a nutritional supplement. Extracted from various plants, this active principle is available in the following forms:

  • Berberine supplements such as extract of Berberis vulgaris offered by SuperSmart which has the advantage of being standardised to 97% berberine;
  • Synergistic formulations such as the anti-ageing supplement AMPK Booster which combines berberine with other natural principles to stimulate production of AMPK, the key metabolism enzyme.
