    Cheese Facts

Cheese is nutritious food made mostly from the milk of cows but also other mammals, including sheep, goats, buffalo, reindeer, camels and yaks. The word cheese comes from Latin caseus,  from which the modern word casein is also derived. The earliest source is from the proto-Indo-European root *kwat-, which means “to ferment, become sour”. Cheese is a delicious and nutritious food that is very versatile. You can add it to other dishes or eat it by itself. It’s convenient and portable. Throughout history, cheese has been an important part of the human diet, both as a dietary staple and a gourmet food. In addition to being delicious, it is highly nutritious and very rich in several vitamins and minerals. There are over 500 different varieties of cheese produced around the world, including Blue, Cheddar, Cottage, Colby, Swiss, Parmesan, and Mozzarella cheese. The type of cheese produced depends on the milk used and its making process. The milk used may be full fat, low-fat, or fat free milk, or combination of these milks. Cheese is one of the most versatile foods that can be prepared in a variety of ways. It can be baked, melted, cubed, grated, crumbled, and sliced, so is excellent for using in a wide variety of cooked dishes.
